Colonial Cocktails delves into Charleston's rich history with rum and Madeira, exploring the deep connections between Charleston and Barbados, two pivotal players in the 17th-century Atlantic trade network. In the early years of Charleston's settlement, rum and Madeira wine were key commodities, with Charleston serving as a central port for the importation of both. Barbados, known for its sugar plantations, was a major producer of rum, which was shipped to Charleston and throughout the colonies, shaping the city’s culture, economy, and social life.
