About the event

Charleston’s long and complex history is often told through its architecture, politics, and pivotal events—but woven through every chapter are the extraordinary women who shaped the city in ways both visible and unseen. This engaging walking tour shines a light on the visionaries, reformers, creatives, entrepreneurs, educators, and unsung heroines whose work helped define Charleston from its earliest days to the modern era.

The Grimké Sisters
The Grimké Sisters

As you explore historic streets, churchyards, and landmarks, you’ll uncover stories of women who challenged social norms, built thriving businesses, organized relief efforts, preserved culture, and drove progress long before they had political rights of their own. From colonial matriarchs managing households and commerce, to Gullah Geechee women preserving language, traditions, and foodways, to abolitionists, suffragists, and resilient women of the Civil Rights Movement, Charleston’s female leaders left an indelible impact on the Lowcountry.
