About the event
Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery is a powerful and deeply personal account by Joseph McGill Jr., founder of the Slave Dwelling Project, and co-author Herb Frazier, an award-winning journalist and historian. In this lecture, McGill shares the extraordinary journey that inspired the book—his mission to raise awareness of America’s enslaved past by sleeping overnight in more than 200 former slave dwellings across the United States. These structures, often ignored or forgotten, become places of remembrance, education, and truth-telling through McGill’s work.

A former National Park Service ranger, Civil War reenactor, and long-time preservationist, McGill founded the Slave Dwelling Project in 2010 to encourage the preservation of slave cabins and to foster honest conversations about slavery's legacy. By physically occupying these spaces, he invites communities to confront uncomfortable histories and recognize the humanity of the millions of enslaved people whose lives shaped the nation.
