About the event
The Gullah Geechee people have preserved one of the most distinctive African-based cultures in the United States—expressed through foodways, language, and community traditions rooted in West Africa. Their culinary heritage blends African staples like okra, rice, yams, peas, and benne seeds with Native American crops and European influences introduced through colonization and enslavement. This powerful legacy endures today in Lowcountry kitchens, where gathering around the table reinforces belonging, storytelling, and identity.

This program features Emma M. Cromedy and Sameka M. Jenkins, the sister duo behind Carolima’s Lowcountry Cuisine and Carolima’s Dessert Boutique, whose work celebrates and preserves the flavors of Gullah Geechee and Southern food traditions. Emma, a passionate baker since childhood, founded the beloved SouthernCakeQueen dessert truck before returning to Charleston to join forces with Sameka. Sameka, one of Charleston’s most sought-after Gullah chefs, is known for her masterful red rice, shrimp and grits, and deeply rooted Lowcountry flavors.…
