About the event
In a newly re-designed educational series, we welcome a variety of expert speakers to the historic American Theater for a captivating lecture and program inspired by the Lowcountry.
On March 20, we welcome Aldous Bertram to the American Theater to talk all things chinoiserie. Art historian and artist Aldous Bertram has long been captivated by chinoiserie, the term for Western art and design inspired by a largely invented vision of China. Marco Polo’s sensational account of his visit to the exotic East in the 13th century sparked a fascination with China that reached a fever pitch in the 18th century and continues to this day. Bertram has organized Dragons & Pagodas by theme, including porcelain, color and pattern, flora, fauna, people, architecture, and tropical exoticism.
Each Experts at the American Theater program will be followed by a short reception with the speaker. Space is limited and tickets are required.
