Often described as “the most romantic street in America,” Church Street offers one of the most evocative and visually rich experiences in Charleston. This historic corridor unfolds like a timeline of the city itself, where Colonial and Georgian residences stand gracefully alongside intimate gardens, churchyards, and centuries-old ecclesiastical landmarks. Tracing its origins to Charleston’s earliest city plan, Church Street features some of the oldest surviving dwellings in the Historic District—structures that reveal the craftsmanship, materials, and architectural language of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Elegant brick town houses, clapboard single houses, ornate fanlights, and wrought-iron gates create a street scape layered with history and beauty.
