About the event

Step back in time and experience Charleston through the powerful lens of historic preservation on this immersive walking tour. Long regarded as one of America’s most carefully protected cities, Charleston has spent centuries safeguarding its architectural beauty, cultural identity, and sense of place amid ongoing change.

As you explore lovingly restored homes, historic streetscapes, landmark buildings, and preserved neighborhoods, you’ll learn how Charleston became a national model for preservation—beginning with early grassroots efforts, the creation of the nation’s first historic district in 1931, and the founding of Historic Charleston Foundation in 1947, an organization whose pioneering Revolving Fund became a blueprint for cities across the country.

You’ll discover how zoning ordinances, height restrictions, architectural review boards, and citywide conservation initiatives have preserved Charleston’s iconic skyline and character. Along the way, the tour brings to life the passionate preservationists, civic leaders, architects, and community members who shaped the movement.
