Charleston's historic peninsula is renowned for its enchanting residential gardens, which reflect centuries of landscape design influenced by European and Southern traditions. Nestled behind wrought iron gates and high brick walls, these gardens are intimate sanctuaries that blend formality with natural beauty. Featuring lush plantings of camellias, jasmine, and magnolias, along with carefully laid brick paths, fountains, and sculptural elements, the gardens showcase Charleston's subtropical climate and penchant for elegance. Many gardens date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving alongside the city’s architecture and history. Today, they remain a testament to Charleston’s rich cultural heritage and enduring commitment to preservation and artistry.
