About the event
Go behind the scenes of the Aiken-Rhett House Museum, c.1820, one of Charleston's most remarkable historic sites, and delve into its unique approach to preservation with Justin Schwebler, HCF Properties Manager. Unlike traditional house museums, the Aiken-Rhett House has adopted a preserved “as-found” preservation style - leaving the historic home frozen in time. This gives visitors a unique experience - the opportunity to tour a space as it was when it was last occupied, with layers of history still visible in its architecture and interiors. This preservation style captures the passage of time and provides an authentic glimpse into the lives of those who lived and worked on the property, including the enslaved individuals whose labor sustained it.
During this exclusive tour, you’ll gain rare access to parts of the house typically closed to the public, uncovering details about ongoing preservation efforts and the challenges of maintaining a historic property…
