About the event
Experience the historic charm of Ansonborough, Charleston’s first rehabilitated neighborhood, on an exclusive small-group tour offered only during The Charleston Festival. This curated experience takes guests through the heart of a district once threatened by decline but transformed through some of Historic Charleston Foundation’s earliest—and most groundbreaking—preservation initiatives in the 1950s and 1960s. The Foundation’s pioneering Ansonborough Rehabilitation Project became a national model, demonstrating how strategic investment and community partnership could bring a historic neighborhood back to life.
Guests will enjoy guided access to four architecturally and historically significant private properties, each showcasing the craftsmanship, preservation work, and layered stories that define Ansonborough’s unique character. With expert interpretation at every stop, this intimate tour offers a rare opportunity to view beautifully preserved interiors, restored facades, and landscapes that anchor Charleston’s early urban fabric.
The morning concludes with a delightful light lunch at the magnificent historic Gadsden House, a grand 18th-century…
